DEEPENING A CULTURE OF DEMOCRACY

In young democracies, democratic practice is often not embedded in the culture. Historically and traditionally, elements exist but are often not carried across cultures or populations. Investing in democratic culture must be seen as an activity that is always ongoing that is never ‘finished’. Old democracies show us time and again how important it is to continue to invest in democratic culture.

Democracy Works Foundation believes that to strengthen democratic culture, it is essential to invest in critical thinking, dialogues and exchanges of ideas to foster freedom of speech. We believe it is equally important to provide platforms for the open exchange of ideas and to help build a culture of consensus and peaceful settlement of differences. We do so by providing:

  • Platforms for democratic engagement to foster consensus and an exchange of ideas
  • Dialogues to foster cross-sector collaboration
  • Dialogues to foster intergeneration learning and collaboration
  • Content for democracy to feed new thinking on democracy and development.
